Pathway is enabling us to be more equitable. For example, more than 40% of our newest partners are from sub-Saharan Africa—almost double the representation from this region in prior years.
Pathway to GlobalGiving was co-created by change leaders for change leaders like Johanssen Obanda. The fundraising threshold that was part of GlobalGiving’s previous welcome journey, the Accelerator, stopped Executive Director Johanssen Obanda and the Jabulani Youths for Transformation team in Kenya from joining GlobalGiving—not once, but twice. Johanssen shared his experiences to help craft a more equitable route for grassroots change leaders to join GlobalGiving.

Connecting 1,768 change leaders across 111 countries in 24 time zones is no small feat. It is a job that Megan DeSisti, GlobalGiving Community Manager, feels privileged to hold. Creating a better world, faster, requires challenging the status quo in philanthropy. Our partnerships with 93 companies in 2023 did just that. More than 3/4 of corporate partners who responded to our annual survey said GlobalGiving's community-led commitments influenced their philanthropic approach, inspiring them to share decision-making power, reduce grantee reporting requirements, and more. Transforming power dynamics in philanthropy is a deeply held GlobalGiving goal. One corporate partner, Riot Games, and their GlobalGiving Grants Manager, Jessica Benz-Ipock, showed how a little flexibility can go a long way. When Academy Camp in Japan couldn’t meet the annual spend-down term of a grant, the trio found a creative, five-year solution to help children affected by the disaster in Fukushima. Living and giving by values is easy for artist Cristy West thanks to GlobalGiving’s vast network of art advocates. The vibrant Nafasi Art Space in Tanzania is one of many initiatives that Cristy supports through GlobalGiving. “I have a deep conviction that the arts really matter—to heal, reveal, transform, connect people, bring joy, celebrate what it means to be human,” Cristy shared. Dismantling inequality isn’t a goal that can be achieved alone. That’s one reason why GlobalGiving joined forces with top giving platforms for Back Black, a movement to celebrate the impact of Black-led philanthropy and address the chronic underfunding of Black-led nonprofits. After an apocalyptic fire devastated the historic town of Lahaina in August, GlobalGiving’s ongoing response efforts includes support for the life-saving efforts of 15 organizations with long histories of serving the people of Hawai’i, including the Arc of Maui, Hawai’i People’s Fund, and the Aloha Diaper Bank.

Among some 6,000 donors who stepped up to support recovery efforts were five teenage bandmates from New Jersey. They donated proceeds from one of their concerts to GlobalGiving’s Hawaii Wildfire Relief Fund. Thousands of acts of care like these constitute the power of the GlobalGiving community.
After a night-time earthquake struck Morocco in September, killing thousands of people and injuring many more, GlobalGiving served the most impacted, often hard-to-reach communities thanks to partnerships with trusted nonprofits, such as the High Atlas Foundation.
The foundation swiftly delivered life-saving aid to more than 1,000 families in more than a dozen villages. High Atlas project leader Houria Chouhab set aside the horror of surviving the earthquake herself to help others.

Ensuring more stories of generosity can be written, for many more years to come, is my most pressing priority as GlobalGiving’s CEO. I am proud to report that we now have a clear, five-year strategy to build the next generation of generosity.
