Summary

Millions of rural Sahelian families waiting for decent housing adapted to climate change. The majority of them live under fragile and uninsulated tin roofs, under the hottest temperatures in the world, on the front line of global warming, to which they have not contributed. By contributing, you will help to fund the distribution of financial incentives to enable rural families to build their Nubian Vault house.

Challenge

100 million of Sahelian people have no access to decent housing and no alternatives to subsistence farming. Thanks to AVN program: rural families acquire better and cheaper homes; local farmers become independent NV masons and entrepreneurs; NV schools for children, NV health-centers for sick people, NV barns for farmers; local economy is stimulated, because scarce funds previously used for buying imported building materials stay in; the environment is protected: less CO2 emission, more trees.

Solution

Our programme allows for the construction of low-carbon houses (Nubian Vaults/NVs) that contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, while supporting economic and social development in the Sahel. Supported by local civil society organisations, offering vocational training, jobs and income for young rurals, this sector aims to provide access to decent housing, adapted to the consequences of climate change, for the millions of Sahelians currently living under fragile and uninsulated tin roofs.

Long-Term Impact

We stimulate the development of a market able to become self-sustainable. When it occurs, we withdraw from the territory, we target a new one and the program scales-up. Thus, if we harness the necessary financial, human, and strategic resources to maintain exponential growth of the program, as we did so far, we may in the long-term obtain key macro-economic and ecological impacts, benefiting 20 million people, 5-10% of the relevant population of the Sahel affected by 2030.
