Summary

Around 72% of locals thought to be living below the national poverty line in Mexico means that resources are limited in many communities. Our project is unique as we provide a safe place for children and vulnerable disabled adults to come, maybe people can't look after disable family members full time as they have to work so our centre we have three small classes of around 8-10 children and our team help them fulfil their day through sensory learning and other activities.

Challenge

Many children in Mexico suffer from some form of abandonment or exploitation with little to no access to education. Many adults work long hours in the tourist industry and children left unattended to or exposed to different threats such as gang recruitment and abuse. Now imagine if a child is seriously disabled they can't move or look after themselves, there is currently no medical facilities that will assist, our project was setup as a safe place for children and vulnerable adults could come

Solution

Open daily we have around 30 members that come to us daily while parents go off in search for minimum wage jobs. As many are living in poverty we aim to provide them with 3 meals a day and then run activities that help stimulate them depending on their age and disability or illness. We recently added a sensory centre with light therapy but we need much more resources for it to be fit for every student. We have 2-3 staff per group and additional carers for those children that need 24/7 care.

Long-Term Impact

Our goal is to help parents go out and work and fight the poverty cycle so they can defend for their family. Medical support is very limited in Mexico and our aim in to ensure these children do not end up on the streets or die.
