Challenge

The west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the closest inhabited area to the epicenter of the earthquake, was devastated by the tsunami. More than 70% of the inhabitants of some coastal villages are reported to have died. Heavy rains after the tsunami in Aceh, northern Sumatra, have increased the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

Solution

This fund will support general disaster relief activities including medical care, shelter for those displaced after the tsunami, food, and clothing for survivors.

Long-Term Impact

Allow local organizations to effectively respond to this crisis affecting huge numbers of Indonesian residents.

Additional Documentation

This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).
