Providence Portland Medical Center is becoming a regional destination for health care services. When patients and their families travel to Portland, finding affordable and convenient lodging can be a major challenge. Providence Portland plans to address that need with a new Guest House offering all the comforts of home. This Guest House will provide a peaceful and welcoming setting conveniently located one block from the hospital.
Gilroy Guest House is an older apartment complex located at NE Hoyt and 47th. From October 2009 to September 2010 there have been 488 reservation requests that could not be honored. In 2010 PPMC had to turn away 572 reservation requests because of the limited capacity. The majority of these requests were surgery cases, families of patients in the ICU/CCU and radiation/oncology patients and their families. Over half of the reservations not met were requested from individuals living in Oregon.
The recently completed PPMC master campus plan includes a 20,000 sq foot, 30 unit Guest Housing structure located one block from the hospital. This building will have a 24/7 secured entry, parking and a Providence staff member on site at all times. PPMC will provide shuttle services for guests to and from PPMC and the Hollywood Transit stop. Area neighborhood associations have reviewed this part of the campus plan and support Providence’s efforts.
An expanded guest housing facility will better meet the mission of caring for the poor and vulnerable. As Providence moves to regional services the demand for housing will only increase. The fact that one-third of the requests that could not be met were made by individuals living on the southern coast of Oregon is demonstration of the growing demand that regionalized services is creating for guest housing.
