Summary

The United Nations and its partners are desperate to bring relief to the Central African Republic (CAR), where worsening strife and unspeakable acts of violence have caused an urgent humanitarian crisis for over 2.2 million people. Thousands of already vulnerable children who have been displaced are living in fear and are in danger of dying from severe acute malnutrition. Supplies of Plumpy'Nut, a fortified peanut-paste, are desperately needed.

Challenge

Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News called the Central African Republic the most dangerous country in the world. Recent violence has caused millions to flee their homes to the relative safety of refugee camps. The United Nations says that famine is imminent. Children are in danger of dying from severe acute malnutrition. Our humanitarian partners urgently need supplies of Plumpy'Nut to save their lives.

Solution

Plumpy'Nut is a Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), recommended by the World Health Organization as the most effective way to treat severe acute malnutrition in children. It is a fortified peanut-paste that does not require refrigeration or the addition of water. It is consumed directly from foil sachets. Plumpy'Nut helps extremely sick children fully recover their health in about seven weeks.

Long-Term Impact

A child's life saved today strengthens a family and an entire community forever. A better future for the Central African Republic - one free of poverty, war, and strife - cannot be achieved without a healthy generation of children. It is urgent that we act now to build a better future for the children of the Central African Republic.
