Challenge

Many of the women in WGEF have had limited access to justice and their basic human and legal rights due to the large scale conflict with the Lords Resistance Army and the atrocities, violence and poverty experienced by communities in the region. Without the knowledge of what their rights as women and basic human beings are, they face challenges accessing the justice chain, continuing gender bias and inequality.

Solution

Through the Access to Justice week long training sessions, the women in Gulu, Uganda will be given proper information about the Ugandan legal system and what rights these women have that they may not have known about before. The program will also create concrete mechanisms for change, such as a hotline for women to have their questions about the legal system addressed. This initiative will ensure the government is held accountable for the enforcement of laws and human rights.

Long-Term Impact

The Women's Global Empowerment Fund will use these training sessions to create an informed body of women who can act as agents of change throughout the country. This initiative will also further create peace and justice in Gulu for all of its citizens. By creating community events and the hotline, the impact of the initiative will continue to address gender biases in the justice chain.
